Text Cleaner (Remove Line Breaks & Formatting)

Strip line breaks, markdown, smart quotes, and emoji from pasted text in one click.

Copied text rarely arrives clean. PDFs add a line break at the end of every line, chatbots wrap answers in asterisks and pound signs, and word processors swap in curly quotes and em dashes that break when pasted into a form or a code editor. This text cleaner fixes all of that in one pass, with a toggle for each fix so you only change what you mean to.

Toggle any combination: remove line breaks, collapse extra spaces, remove duplicate lines, strip markdown symbols such as bold markers, headings, backticks, quote arrows, and list bullets, straighten smart quotes, replace em and en dashes with hyphens or commas, remove emoji, and trim each line. It is a quick way to get chatbot output ready for an email or a document. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Paste the messy text into the box.
  2. Switch on the fixes you want: line breaks, spaces, duplicates, markdown, quotes, dashes, emoji, trimming.
  3. Check the cleaned result and copy it.

What each cleanup does

Each toggle makes one specific change, so you can combine them without surprises:

Nothing else is touched. Capitalization, spelling, and word order stay exactly as you pasted them.

  • Remove line breaks: joins lines into flowing paragraphs, the fix for text copied from a PDF or an email
  • Collapse extra spaces: turns runs of spaces and tabs into a single space
  • Remove duplicate lines: keeps the first copy of any repeated line and leaves blank lines alone, useful for lists and logs
  • Strip markdown: removes **, #, backticks, > quote markers, and list bullets while keeping the words
  • Straighten smart quotes: swaps curly quotes and apostrophes for the straight kind that code and forms expect
  • Replace dashes: turns em dashes into commas, and en dashes into hyphens between numbers and commas elsewhere
  • Remove emoji: deletes emoji and pictographs while leaving letters and punctuation alone
  • Trim each line: removes leading and trailing whitespace from every line

Cleaning up chatbot output

Chat models write in markdown by default. In the chat window it renders as bold text, headings, and bullets; pasted into an email, a form, or a document that does not understand markdown, it becomes a litter of asterisks and pound signs. Models also favor em dashes and curly quotes, which some systems display as odd symbols or reject outright.

For a chatbot answer bound for email, the usual combination is strip markdown, straighten quotes, replace dashes, and collapse spaces, leaving line breaks in place so paragraphs survive. For a spreadsheet cell or a single-line form field, add remove line breaks. If you want to keep headings and lists as readable plain lines, the Markdown to Plain Text converter is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded?
No. Every change is made in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent anywhere.
Why replace em dashes at all?
Some forms, code editors, and older systems do not handle them well, and many readers now associate heavy dash use with chatbot writing. Swapping them for a hyphen or a comma sidesteps both.
Does strip markdown remove the text inside bold or headings?
No. It removes only the symbols. **Important** becomes Important, and a # heading becomes a plain line.
What is the difference between this and Markdown to Plain Text?
The Text Cleaner is a set of independent fixes you can mix. The converter understands markdown structure, so it handles links, tables, and nested lists more carefully. For chatbot output with tables or links, use the converter; for quick whitespace and symbol cleanup, use this.
